Spelling:

You can help your child prepare for the assessment by having him/her underline the vowels in red and the consonants in blue, cut and sort the words by the long vowel sound or by calling the words out and having your child spell the words orally or write them.  You can also give them other words that follow the same rules for more practice.

Below are some examples of words that follow our focus sounds for this week, but are not necessarily the spelling words that will be on the test.

Spelling Rules

The exact spelling of words with a long A vowel sound must be memorized. To develop mastery takes practice over time.

EA says /ā/ in only nine common words: (steak, great, break, yea) and (bear, wear, swear, tear, pear).

English words do not end in I.

EIGH says /ā/ is an uncommon spelling. It is found in only seven common base words: (eight, freight, sleigh, weigh, and neigh). These words can be expanded to words like eighteen, weight, neighbor).

EY says /ā/ in only a few common one syllable words such as: hey, they, prey, whey.

1 Syllable Sample Words:

eight     sleigh     freight

great     steak      break
